One down, four to go …

WWU:  Got through another large-moon, holiday weekend … thank goodness!  AND – I’m not needed for the first week of my 5 WEEK subpoena!  SWEET!  So later today marks day one of the twins’ first day of High School!  Just 4 more years of this  … THANK GOODNESS!

So thrilled to NOT have to report to court at 8AM(!), I spent some time in the studio.  The coffin load is finally ready to go … and then, creativity hit.  It was time to play with glass clay.  Here’s what I have … Santa Claus meets John Lennon (glasses).  We’ll see … It may have been smarter to start with some trial shapes, but what fun is that?!?  Time to see what 1200-1300 degrees does to him … (once he finishes drying)

Dogs = Good Therapy!

Crummy day!  Started with a wake-up SANE call … yeah, my favorite.  Spent way too many hours ‘debating’* with police agencies on behalf of my patient, ending several hours later with a temporary ‘truce’ – before I start again tomorrow … [*one never ARGUES with the police]dog-therapy

And while I came home drained of any creative energy for the studio, my four-legged kids helped cheer me up – with love, kisses and Lots of SLOBBER!  Once my call (shift) ends, we’ve all earned a glass (or two) of wine …

(BTW – that’s Sienna, Olivia, Zonie, Zeus, Tess, Maggie and Yoda Kei … the rest of the gang was lounging and/or chasing the ball)

On a roll – and then …

Glass-painted-ornamentsI was on a roll, feeling good(!) – UNTIL … But first, the good:

I got through the weekend(!), while taking care of some difficult, NEEDY patients  and families … (‘nuf said!)  I was able to get to sleep early Monday morning, allowing for some quality evening time – family (two-legged), romp (four-legged), and the STUDIO:

I have my painted glass in the kiln, setting as I type …

I put together the next large batch of badge reels; And even a few pendants … (hope to get some photos taken this week)

Dichro-badge-reels     Dichro-glass-pendants

But then – I tried to get tricky and put a pinch bail on my leaf pendant … Yeah, it didn’t go so well (DOH!!!):

That’s when I decided it was time to step back, watch some Sherlock (BBC series – LOVE IT!), and HAVE A BEER!

This week is ‘Get-the-Twins-Ready-to-go-BACK-to-School-Week’!  I don’t know if they are ready, but I AM!  ‘Course it means Mom’s Taxi has a busy week ahead …

The cup is more than half full … and it’s Summer

Had our weekly photo-shoot.  Sienna’s boys are showing signs of being ready for more sustenance (weaning).  Zonie’s babies have opened their eyes.  We have folks calling and visiting regularly – which means the maid is working double duty, but hey … it’s all good.  Look at all that squishy-love!

Have squeezed out a few hours for the studio, as I’ve been shipping packages too (LOVE THAT!).  Hope to get around to that coffin debubbling-load and etched glass-run tomorrow.  And my paintings are coming along (round 2 fusing as I type).  No new projects yet, but ideas are flowing …

Had company tonight, which meant home-made Bacon Roadhouse burgers (just like Rally’s/Checkers), sweet potato fries, cucumber salad and Pina Colada Dream Pie (except we used Coconut Cream instant pudding) – along with a great visit.

Rounding out a good week here at Clayton Hill … AND, I still have tomorrow – with clear skies and SUNSHINE!  Now, if I could just get that maid to clean the studio!!!

The Giving Tree … AKA WWU

‘Round and ‘round we go … [Warning – philosophical, WORDY post!]

I hate it when I get mad at work.  Aarrrggh, WHY?!?  Anger angryis (almost) always a wasted emotion.

But, when a mid-level practitioner [one I feel I’ve helped raise and mold over the years] decided to stand on his soap-box and lecture ME about being tired of hearing “nurses complain about his orders”, I got mad.  What this former pupil of mine doesn’t recognize is that he is still chasing the ‘life-saving-high’ that certain complex procedures can give – when performed SUCCESSFULLY.  Forget the fact that some of these current ER mandates are not only useless, but down-right bad in the face of good nursing care or unskilled medical care.  [Lactic acid levels and central lines – in a free-standing, rural E.R. … THIS means sick folk get flown out PRONTO!], ARRRGGHHH!!!  If you understand the concept behind AGGRESSIVE fluid hydration, how the body works in a septic patient  and WHAT you’re chasing … there’s no NEED to delay transfer for the problematic central line … just sayin’!!!]

mad-nurseBut no, he lumped me in with ALL NURSES … even the bad/whiney/clueless ones … OH, that hurt!  Dude, you did NOT just go THERE???

I spent a LOT of time last night working through my emotional turmoil.  My initial response – “You are SOOO on your own now … Listen here, you little punk! … Think a nurse can’t make your life difficult? … Watch and learn, young Padawan!”  And while I relished in those evil thoughts for a bit, I realized I would never jeopardize a patient’s health – even if the medical practitioner deserved it.  He eventually apologized – in a weak, MALE fashion [- ‘I don’t understand what your issue is, BUT  …’], “sorry … Are we good now?” …

The Giving TreeSo … HOURS later, once again in my Mother Theresa/zen-like WISDOM – I’m circling around with this question:  Is it MY current life-stage malfunction?  I’m reminded of one of my favorite childhood books – “The Giving Tree” (by Shel Silverstein), and while I accept that I’m NOT at that particular altruistic point of view [‘the tree’] right now … Will I EVER BE???

Oh  – such DEEPNESS on a Monday morning …  The reality of today:  Everyone got GOOD CARE in my ER this weekend; I may have taken the next step on the ‘Road to Maturity’ – or maybe my hormone levels have just peaked for this month (?!?); … Predictions are for a WARMING-TREND and SUNSHINE  in Michigan this week!!!  So – at the end of the weekend … It’s All Good!

sunshine - pool

I should know better …

glass-paintingthan to play in my studio when I’m annoyed and tired.  But no … I’m waiting to see if the sun will come out (for a quick dip in the pool) before crashing – after a long, busy night at work – in order to go back for 12 more hours of fun tonight.  So – I’m playing with my current studio projects:  [I’m back to] painting on glass …

Here’s my Tigger ornament (before and after fusing the black):

glass-Tigger     Tigger-after-fusing

And, trying to work through some internal annoyance, I was inspired to make a Cruella Deville ornament … there’s some kind of therapeutic transference of energy in this project, I’m sure.  Anyway, here she is after fusing the black, and with round one of color added (and now drying) … Hummphhh – we’ll see.

Ode-to-EB     Evil-Biologic-art

Also have another round of etched cabs waiting for their turn in the baby kiln; And my latest blue blank – I like it.  Should be able to get the coffin loaded some time this coming week …

[Yawwwnn] … Wait – is that the sun peekin’???  Mmm – not yet.  I’ll leave with a quick pic of Mighty Zeus waiting for the sunshine with me …

Studio Time, Presents and Dogs … OH MY!

glass-TiggerHave eked out some studio time … playing with a Tigger (from Winnie the Pooh – DH’s favorite) ornament.  I plan to paint it, but set it on my recent blank (in oranges, reds and golds) and I kinda like the look … Whatcha think? (It’s black glass paint, that looks gray until fused …)

Anyway – here is the full blank.  I’ve got another one (this time in shades of blue) cookin’ in the kiln as I type …

Olivia-BdayWe received a wonderful surprise in the mail yesterday.  It’s our Olivia’s birthday, and one of our extended family sent us a present – full of homemade dog treats (that smell incredibly YUMMY – pumpkin and peanut butter!!!) for our whole canine gang … AWWW!  And a too-cute Neapolitan Mastiff birthday card!  Thanks Jenny and Dexter!

So – we caught some pics of a few of the four-legged kids enjoying Olivia’s treats:  Livvie (the birthday girl), Zeus and Momma Zonie (with some of her pups).  Too Cute!!!  (Don’t worry – everyone (with four legs) got some …)

But now, it’s time to make dinner … Shrimp Alfredo (for the two-legged folks here).

Sunshine …THANK YOU!!!

It was wayyy too early to start feeling S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) … but with 4 days of cloudy-gloom in AUGUST – that’s what was happening!  So thank you sunshine for appearing!  DH and the kids thank you too!

My time in the studio was also much needed – and productive:  Spoon rests cut; A few successful future-cabs; DH did a little cutting too (his work in progress picture-frame); Another new blank made (AND one in the kiln as I type) … Working my way up to a coffin-load!  Yay!!

I’ll leave with a couple cute pics of Sienna’s boys – who are finally peekin’! Smile

22 Years of Wedded Bliss …

DH-Anniversary-cardOK – not always.  But we do have our moments … Like – now.   While granting me some alone/studio time, DH is making dinner, while the twins babysit the den (pups).  Awww … And, I’ve got to show off the sweet card he gave me.22-yr-anniversary  Yeah – that would be his ‘southpaw’ chicken- scratch declaring his love … (Is it any wonder I have no problem deciphering “doctor-handwriting”???) Smile Happy Anniversary Babe!

News from the Den:  All are doing well.  The pups are growing by-the-minute!  Sienna’s boys will have their eyes open within the next day or so.  Zonie’s babies are all gaining and growing consistently.  With a litter of 12, we split them so that only half have access to mom/food at one time.  It means poor Zonie has to deal with ‘double-duty’ – and she’s doing great with it!  And both Moms are turning the corner with fussy eating – YAY!!!  Will post some squishy-faced puppy photos soon.  Meanwhile – I want to try making a few “Neo-Paw” pendants … here’s the image.  Hope to see soon if it will translate into a dichroic pendant:

Neo-paw

Have a new blank made, and one cookin’ in the kiln as I type.  I think this one is destined for some spoon rests ….

blank-8-13-12

And lastly … DH had an idea about a glass photo-frame.  Here’s the inspiration for it – a mirror we made (out of wood) some 12-13 years ago, when we were doing craft shows.  Since it’s DH – and he only works when inspiration strikes, time allows and the stars are in alignment … it’ll be a while before he gets around to a finished piece ready for the kiln.  Winking smile   Oh – gotta go … time for dinner!

Tiptoe through the …

Zonie's babiesNo, not tulips … Puppies!  The gang’s all here.  Zonie started having her babies in the wee hours of Tuesday morning (about 4am) … Now, some 36 hours later (we all got some sleep), we are settling into a great routine of ‘life on the outside’ … Smile  In case you’re having trouble counting … that’s 12 babies there (10 girls and 2 boys)!

Zonie and pups

Both of my moms and their babies are doing great.  We’re going through expected and acceptable post-whelping phases.  It must be love on my part, as I CANNOT STAND the smell of liver – but my moms love it, so they’re getting it, along with puppy food (kibble), hot dogs, yogurt, eggs-n-cheese, peanut butter and canned (dog) food.  You name it, if they like it – they get it.  And Zonie smiles at me when she sees me heading from the kitchen – all scrunched-up/wrinkled-mass/Neo-style.  It’s beautiful in a kinda-scary, homely, goofy sort of way … just like HER momma (Olivia – NOT me … Jeez!)

Made it through DARN SANE (due, in part to lack-of-sleep exhaustion), providing a 3 hour work in-service and the twins are wrapping up their Driver’s Ed today … I wonder if they passed their test???

Not a whole lot of studio time, but that’s okay.  We’ll get there … Time to go check on the babies.
