Weekend Wrap Up … Show no fear

Or – ‘Utilizing all that I know’ …

What to do when you’re surrounded by female, young (yeah – that means the skinny kind!), inexperienced coworkers and you’re staring into the face of a psych patient (I mean the real one – with crazy eyes) who is angry and intoxicated to boot … 20 years of nursing, 18 years of child rearing and 10 years of loving, rescuing and breeding a giant, alpha breed of dog run through your mind in the seconds you take to play out the potential scenarios in your head:  “Shoot – he may be short, but he’s got muscle, and he’s pretty ticked off … we could really get hurt here!” was my internal alarm screaming at me … What showed on my face?  My sternest ‘mother look’ when the patient made eye contact … “Show NO FEAR,” my inner-self yelled!  Yeah, OK!  Protect the young, pregnant and inexperienced … so I found myself stepping into the direct line of fire … “Dog-gone this is stupid Kris – you’re gonna get hurt!” – my less-courageous inner voice starts whining.  “But – they’ve called the police – just need to hang in ‘til they get here,” I think as I make physical contact with the patient with the crazy eyes, talking to him about cleaning him up, washing his bloody hands from where he ripped his IV out … “There now – this is better,” I say, when I see the three 6 foot tall officers … all is good now!

And off I go to deal with the next emergency –“flu symptoms x 3 hours” … So went my weekend.  Like so many other weekends.  You take the chief complaint, utilize all of your assessment skills and try your best to read between the lines to find out what it is this patient wants or needs?  Narcotics, attention, a magic wand, a work-note, a warm blanket, TV (really?!?), a hidden agenda … etc.  This is my job.  Sometimes I can nail it pretty quickly, other times it’s trial and error, and then there’s “The Momma’s Boy”.  I know what they want, but … Arrggh!  Really?  You’re a 35 year old man.  You have a COLD!  You are NOT dying.  You brought your own pillow to the ER, for crying out loud.  I will not be your surrogate mother, cooing and stroking  your brow while I commend you for being so strong and courageous!  Nope, can’t do it … Give me crazy eyes anytime!

Den update and studio time …

The Neo pups have started in on gruel … and they love it!  Of course, they  have to wear as much as they eat.  And more times then not, they climb right into the bowl, as it apparently tastes better that way!  Smile In between eating, there is still lots of sleeping and growing going on … Mountains of puppies in the whelping box.

The Yorkie clan:  Yoda Kei is healthy and sassy, never letting his smaller size slow him down from keeping up with his very playful littermates (I gave up trying to get good pictures, as they are constant motion!) … Zettie is a mountain goat, trying to climb from my lap to my chest … Zonie is more reserved, preferring to cuddle in a lap, especially on her back for belly rubs.  And Kong is in the middle – not quite the courageous forager like Zettie, discovering new lands and hilltops, but content to follow in her footsteps in between naps.  I took his ears down (out of tape) and they held for a day, but then started to droop.  Back to the tape and that pathetic look for you, buddy.

Studio … I keep the blanks coming as I’m really liking this pressed glass look.  I think I want to make night lights out of this, but I like it whole too, so maybe a bowl …  (And I’m still running wine bottles in the coffin.)

With all of this productive/camera time, I think I’ve earned a glass of wine … Smile

I’m back …

The to-do list has shrunken to an acceptable level … this means my kilns have been running!  YAY!!  I have a large blank cooling in the production kiln and bottles slumping in the coffin, as I type.  Oh, I like this MUCH better!  The new color combinations and finished-product ideas are flowing (haha) like crazy … so my creativity is back too!  I hope to have some new night lights and focus on some larger 14+ inch bowls …

Large blue blank

I’m making rice pudding (first time) and Squash (with Italian Sausage) soup … for dinner tomorrow, as I‘ll be finishing up the last of the (latest) work competencies tomorrow … Yep, I like this MUCH BETTER …

I’ll leave you with a quick pic of Momma Liv cuddling with some of her pups … Awww.

Weekend Wrap-Up … Ouch and Yuck!

That sums up the weekend.  Very busy with needy patients and families on Saturday … Needy as in sick (really sick, sepsis sick); ‘Super-Sized Jerry Springer drama’ families; dedicated drug seekers that would not take no for an answer.  Plus I had to complete a CSC (rape) case in the ER.  I hate that … I spent as much time with the victim as I could, but still … just not the ideal place for that complaint!

As the weekend progressed – it didn’t get much better … I took care of a patient that had such a medical EMERGENCY that she was able to complain multiple times within the first 5 minutes that the TV in her room was broken.  Customer service super-agent that I am, I moved her to a new room (with functioning TV), once she ‘stabilized’ … (read: went outside to smoke and call friends.)  And don’t even get me started on the flu patients …

I will spend the week re-embracing my New Year’s resolution …  I will not take things personally, I will not get upset with dumb people, I will be kinder-gentler … or I will seriously consider a job as a gas pump attendant … it’s a pretty cool hat!

Ahhhh … for the moment

Maggie is back to her fat-healthful-state.  The taxes are done, now to make the appointment.   And it’s time to get ready for work … I can’t imagine life possibly getting any better …

Yeah … ok … maybe a thing or two …

Certified – or certifiable … ???

Thank you Lord!  I have successfully completed the mandatory GENE training (Geriatric Emergency Nurse Education) … What does this mean?  I can spout random statistics, irrelevant factoids and common sense issues regarding elderly patients.  Thank goodness!  I feel like I’m a better nurse already.  But, the really cool news (outside of the fact that I am out of that online computer HELL of a program, and I gained CEU’s – always helpful!) – I can cross two more competencies off my should-do list!!

Now, if I can just wrap up our taxes … I know, I’m procrastinating and whining … what would the ENA nurses (creators of GENE training) have to say … ???  Certainly depressed, possibly delusional or even demented … Smile It’s just that I really want to get back to some studio time, dang it!  And all of this LIFE stuff (work, governmental requirements, insurance testing, etc.) is getting in the way!  And my Maggie (10 y/o Yorkie) is sick … she’s running a fever and isn’t eating/drinking enough … so we’re going to the vet today.

When the to-do list is no fun … play with puppies!

So, my should-do list is growing out of control … taxes, competency tests, appointments, meetings, house work  … YUCK!  No studio time … but I do have puppy time!  Smile

We had our first Neo pup ‘photo shoot’ today … they are growing so quickly, and their eyes are open.  And, they’re toddling around like drunken soldiers, wandering around the whelping box whenever Mom steps out.  Very cute!  Since we’ve been raising Neo pups for over 10 years now, my idea of cute pics aren’t what I post on our (Neo) web site … thought I’d share a few here …

Weekend wrap-up … let it snow

Looks like ‘Snowmageddon’ finally hit – or I should say ‘is hitting’, as I believe they’re still calling for more today and tomorrow – this time without all the hoopla and forewarning …

So we had two types of patients last night:  Those that were really sick, and those that wanted to be really sick, as they had ‘braved the weather’ to come in to the ER.  The second group was NOT pleased with the quick turn-around, ‘treat and street’ method all ER nurses love … They were convinced it was a rare disease process that we were completely missing, and not just ‘the FLU’ …  From overly protective middle-aged (new) parents (the WORST) to over-protective adult children of geriatric patients (yeah, equally painful) … while I’m all for patients and their families being advocates and involved in their care, repeating myself 15 different ways to ‘answer’ their question(s) gets old, really quick.  Pepper in some pediatric incarcerated hernias, geriatric hemothoraxes, pulmonary emboli’s, and sepsis … oh, and one intoxicated loser, compliments of the state troopers, who went from insulting me to proposing sexual favors … All I can say – I am SO glad this weekend is OVER!!

Time to unwind, plan for the week, and play with puppies …

Creative Blahs …

It’s Thursday … it was a beautiful day temperature-wise.  I didn’t even mind all the mud.  I’ve finished my ‘DARN SANE’ call for the week.  I’ve had multiple visitors over the last few days (Yorkie pups).  I have a houseful of adorable, fun, healthy puppies.  I got to see my daughter’s basketball game (who knew middle school girls b-ball was so rough!?).  I even did some work this week on taxes … I have 48 hours of ‘free time’ before starting my shifts in the ER … so why am I so blah?  No creativity going on, I guess.  No studio project ‘burning a hole’ in my head to get my hands on … Hmmm.  Maybe what I need is a night of nothingness, vegging in front of the TV …

News from the Den …

bottlesI have such great friends!  In the last week, I’ve been given a ton of bottles!  Now to spend my dog-sitting-duty time soaking labels and scrubbing bottles, in between switching pups and feeding Liv … I think I’ll try quenching glass this week.

Olivia is getting her appetite back.  I like this much better!  Her crew is growing sooo quickly.  They’re traveling all around the whelping box, snuffing out mom like little piglets!  Smile  They’re a week old and have doubled their weight … Great job Momma Liv!!

Meanwhile, Tunie’s pups are moving on to their new homes this week.  I will miss them … but I also know they’ll get more one-on-one attention/spoiling than I can give. naysbabies6wks Monet’s babies are ready to expand their world … so we’re making the next step to free roam in the back hall.  We have names:  Yoda Kei, Zonie, Zetia and Kong.  They recently got their ears trimmed, and I can see I’ll need to help Kong a bit (droopy ears – so I’ll have to tape them up).  I weighed Yoda … he is up to a whopping 15.6 ounces … almost a pound!!  They’re loving canned food, and we’ll start the transition to soaked kibble now that their teeth are in.

Our youngest daughter had her first basket ball game on Monday … they won!  Go Eagles!!  Our oldest son has finally decided to take the last step of the multi-phase ‘get your license’ process … It’ll be nice to have one less patron of ‘Moms Taxi Service’, but I also worry about him driving … alone!  I don’t consider myself one of those moms that can’t cut the apron strings – but I’m also an ER nurse, which means I can picture him hurt 886 different ways …  I guess he’s doing his job – making me worry.  Disappointed smile

Time to drag the tax papers back out and and finish sorting through that mountain …
