Ready, Set ~ Go … CRAZY

highland heydaysSo, I’ve done it again.  DH and I have committed to doing an art show (or two).  Yep, on the weekend … when I’m working.  So, if you’re in the area on September 14 & 15, stop on by and see us at the Highland HeyDays Festival.  (Or – swing into the Opera House in Howell on September 20 &21 …)  I’ll be the wild-eyed one with the silly grin who hasn’t slept …

But, before we get there – I have to make myself crazy.  I’m making lists, cutting glass and running programs like a gerbil-on-crack.  DH keeps telling me we have plenty of stock, but – you know … gotta make more.

I have a new tent and an 8 foot banner coming.  I’ve purchased some display shelving, which needs to be painted – more fun with oil based paints!  (Photos to come … ) Insane … but, I’m excited!

All of that, on top of getting the twins ready for back-to-school, taking care of the four-legged gang and keeping up with doctor appointments.  Let’s go crazy!!!

This week in the studio …

So, my flower plate ERUPTED too … Dang it!

peony-platter-blow-out

But, I have a plan for this plate and the failed peacock piece … [drumroll] … spoon rests!!!  Winking smile  To go with the other spoon rests I’ll be cutting from these blanks and future bowls …

My plate/platter slump run went well.  I like this ‘patch work’ platter.  And, I finally got around to weave slumping those sticks from … 6+ months ago.  I’ll need to do some grinding before it will actually fit together, but – you get the idea.

I’m kicking around the idea of doing a fall art show.  We’ll see.  (I meet with the surgeon (again) this week, along with my primary) … So, in the meantime, I’m stocking up on ornaments.

Now, it’s time to open up a bottle (or two) of wine and get those darn (computer) work competencies done!

Oh Snap!

Who shot the peacock?!?  Dammitall!

Turns out, IF you read the actual CPI tutorial for the plate, there is a small, significant tip regarding firing:  “If the posts are too far under the tile, they will cause uneven heat to that area. Elevating the mold helps to heat the glass more evenly and helps to eliminate eruptions during the firing process.”  I love learning lessons the hard way …

Moving on:  I have the coffin loaded for slumping.  And, I’m just about ready to try this peony platter.  Here’s hoping the kiln-gods are happy with the sacrificial peacock offering … My wall of shame is getting too crowded!

Busy ~ but I’m lovin’ it!

What a week!  I’ve been taking serious advantage of insomnia.  I have 3 kilns running, and so much to report … Here’s what I worked on tonight:  Fingers crossed it turns out as promising as I hope!

And, I finished my fish ‘sculpture’ … the Twins gave it a ‘thumbs up’, and it’s kinda growing on me.  I hope to have it delivered in time for the LCAA exhibit, along with a couple of other fish themed items (maybe – fingers crossed!).  I’m also trying out a new mold for a business card display … it’s in the coffin kiln now, along with plates, platters and fishes … oh, my!

All while keeping up with the gang!  We have puppies … Sienna went into labor at 530am Sunday morning.  Mom and pups are doing great and the nursery is active with puppy noises.  Smile  Speaking of which … it’s time for my shift.

Happy Anniversary Weekend …

As we roll into the anniversary of our special day, I am celebrating!  How, you ask?  Well, I started my day with not one, but two ‘DEEP core’ weight-loss donations (… and it hurt!).  Armed with nothing stronger than Motrin, we went to celebrate … at my local glass supplier – while DH went to Harbor Freight … ah, wedded bliss!

I partied like a rock-star … scoring a corelite one-piece kiln shelf.  Still aching, I ordered some SWEET dichroic glass, ‘cuz ya know – pain can have a weird effect on folks … Before you judge – check it out!

Like a kid in her favorite candy store, all my goodies are in their proper place here in the studio.  I’m firing more platters (check out that beautiful kiln shelf); and have been making strides on the ‘fish project’ … Still more grinding to do, and totally inspired by another artist’s warm glass work, but this is a one-of-a-kind for me [ummm, one giant, 12 inch fish sculpture checked-off the list] … so my fingers are permanently crossed for some success!

Seriously kicking around going to work, ah … later today.  I took another hit last weekend (physical), and don’t think I could begin to tolerate that right now.  [We won’t get into it, but lets just say as weekend wrap up: After 23 years of nursing, I needed to get strict with a (female) patient who made me feel uncomfortable … my level of compassion does not extend to my “No-No Squares” – ever!]  Since narcs and nursing (THAT way!) are frowned upon – I’m struggling …

I’ll leave with a cute pic of Taagggerrttt!

And it hurt …

Nettle StingersAfter four + decades, I managed to come across something I really wish I hadn’t – Stinging Nettle.  stinging nettleDang!  I touched it for all of 2 seconds, while pulling weeds, and HOURS later my hand/arm is still bugging me.  After some research, turns out this wonderful burning-meets-pins-and-needles sensation can last up to a week!  WTH!?!  Amazing stuff – really … but OUCH!  (While researching, I came upon all sorts of foods/drinks made out of the offending weed, including SOUP … (gives heartburn a whole new spin … umm, NO THANKS!)

BTW – speaking of other amazing, but equally evil items of nature … check out this link.  NSFW or kids, but presented in a (sarcastic) funny way.  Sacculina (on the second page) – now that’s some crazy-a$$ sh*t!

parasites

Moving on … to add to my stinging, I’m slicing up my fingers – cutting and grinding a new glass project.  For whatever reason, I feel compelled to contribute to our next local artist exhibit.  The chosen topic is ‘Fish’ … cuz my county is such a nautical area???  Anyway, after searching for ideas, I’m plugging away at a few fish-themed items.  We’ll see …

And – I’ve got a few more platters moving forward.  I’ve stalled on my spoon rests, as our disc grinder seized up.  But – our anniversary isn’t far off, so I see a shopping trip in my near future … Winking smile

No More Sunshine?!? What!!!

TaggertSo, I don’t have lupus or mixed-connective tissue disease … yet!  Although, my newest doctor tells me that SUNSHINE could cause my ANA to flip.  WTH!?!  Next, someone’s gonna say that Diet Coke or alcohol are bad for you!!!  In the meantime, I meet with the surgeon again next week …

Meanwhile, DH did it again.  I wish I’d taken a photo of poor, pathetic Taggert (our newest family member) with his ridiculous babushka head wrap.  Yep – DH had his ears cropped.

I have platters loaded in the kiln for final slumping.  I had a mishap in the production kiln … my (previously stable) pieces with mica layers decided to revolt and blow apart in the kiln.  So now I have two globs of YUCK!  DOH!  Along with the rest of my cabs – that turned out lovely, BTW …

Platters

Took the kids to see The Wolverine.  They liked it.  I had too many thoughts of mutant body parts flowing around in my head to enjoy the movie.  But I did walk out of the theater feeling glad that I’m not a viper … YET!  Maybe chocolate causes that?!?  Winking smile

Moving along …

I have three kilns running!  Yea BABY!!!  More platters, dichro cabs (with some requested Angels), and a few experiments.  Love it!

And, I’ll have a de-bubble run coming later this week.  Yep, moving along …

Slept some 18 out of 28 hours(! – I know, right?!?) – so, I’m over the trauma of the weekend  (‘nuff said).  Spent time with our oldest ‘baby’ – who turns 21 this week (LORDY- I’m OLD!!!) …

I attended a local community artist gathering tonight.  Kinda fun, and I met some neat folks.

And(!) – rumor has it that warm, SUNNY days are supposed to hit some time this week.  Almost makes up for my next ‘specialist’ doctor appointment … MmHmm, moving along!

Deep Thoughts …*

By  Jack Handey Nurse Ginger:  [AKA WWU.  Let me set the stage a bit first.]  (* DH says this post is hard to follow.  I maintain any nurse or care-provider can follow along …)

  1. I have triggers (things that a patient can say or do that instantly rub me the wrong Deep Thoughts J Haneyway).  I recognize many of them (Hey, that’s the first step in the 12 step process – just ask Disney …).  As a customer-service super-agent, I try to have an APPROPRIATE  response for most of them.
  2. I’m an ER nurse … This means I’m superstitious and have an INNATE dislike/aversion/fear of the word “QUIET” … (gosh, I even hate typing  that word.)
  3. If left alone with my thoughts for a minute or two, in the wee hours of the morning (when slap-happy meets punch-drunk, just before irritable and tired sink-in), I will fixate on any given patient interaction: Dissect the dialogue – my verbal and/or non-verbal response(s), consider the present lunar phase and how that may be playing a role, etc…

SNL Deep ThoughtsSo, here’s the deep-thought part:  When a patient says, “Is it QUIET tonight?  It sure seems QUIET …”  After controlling my inward cringe, resisting the urge to make the sign of the cross over my head, and stopping my lip from curling … I pause.  What is the correct super-agent response to that question?  Seriously, what does a patient expect to hear???

I let all the voices in my head cut-loose and speak-up for a few seconds … to ‘try on’ the different replies:

  • “Hmm, I haven’t really had a chance to sit down yet – but I have penciled in ‘PEEING’ in the next 30 minutes …
  • “Totally.  My fellow nurses and I were just about to paint each others toe nails – but, now that you’re here …
  • “Oh sure – NOW!  But you should have been here 20 minutes ago – when we amputated a patient’s limb.  Wow, THAT was some fun …”
  • “You bet.  I was just about to start to inventory our stock.  I have ‘enema products’ tonight – so THANK YOU for saving me …”
  • “Not so much – but, I was thinking about scarfing down some food right before you got here … I (obviously) have plenty of back-up to burn, so – Thanks!”

MIBI decide none of the above would go over well with this particular patient, who has no sense of humor that I can detect.  So, I go with simple and honest … “No.” [… No inflection in my voice, no facial expression, no further discussion.]  It didn’t really feel like it was THE ANSWER  that the patient was looking for …

So – I’ve asked management for some ‘scripting’ help.  In the meantime, I’m open to all suggestions [… No, honestly!  Are we really just ‘making conversation’?!?  In which case, a comment about the weather – or my weight – would probably be more appropriate … ???].  I’m curious what a patient expects, or even hopes to hear.  But – you need to know, I am a tad sarcastic, and I don’t lie well … like, at all.  So, if it’s a total bogus, sunshine statement – I’ll probably choke on it before I can get it out …

sunshine rainbow unicorn crap

Moving forward …

Just about running out of ideas to try for Miss Betty Boop.  I thought I had it figured out – a chemical reaction within the powders, but … I don’t think so now.  I think the charred/burnt look is actually the black base powder coming through, as the layers are so thin …  Here’s my most recent trial.  I put down the black base layer and covered it with clear – to prevent any powders from reacting.  After firing, I added the colored layers (all opal powders).   Overall, she looks deathly gray – until you hold her up to sunlight when you can see hints of the flesh tone coming through.  I have one more trial in the kiln and one more idea for her before I (temporarily) give up and stew …

Meanwhile, I’m making blanks, as I finally realized I’m out of spoon rests.  And, I’m working on some requested dichro cabs (photos to come).

But for now – it’s time for a dip in the pool before I head off to a weekend of fun-filled ER nursing.  I’ll leave with a cute pic of Thor … such a handsome boy!
